Title

Confessional Mode as Selfie: A Case Study of Kamala Das’ My Story

Authors

Abstract

Feminism refers to a cultural, political and economic movement aimed to establish equal rights and protection for women. Women are always suppressed and marginalized by the patriarchal society and they have been exploited in all walks of life. A search for identity and the protest against the existing laws of patriarchy are the main themes of feminist writings. Kamala Das is the greatest woman poet in contemporary Indian English literature. She writes with openness and frankness which is unusual in the Indian context and literature. Her autobiography, My Story, is the platform to expose the real experiences of life, her inner conflicts, and the plea for woman’s rights. My Story, which is written as a confessional mode, reveals the strength and revelation of her life experiences quite successfully. Confessional mode of writing guarantees the truthfulness in its depiction of life of the author. This paper is an attempt to analyse the relationship between selfie culture and the confessional mode of writing through the eyes of My Story. In the modern world selfie becomes a powerful media which associates with one’s quest to reveal the identity within the growing cyber cultural. Like selfie, the confessional mode of writing is one of the ways through which the writer can express his or her thoughts and experiences of life.
