Title

A REVIEW ON ENHANCING THE HEAT TRANSFER OF LAMINAR FLOW IN TUBE WITH INSERTION OF TWISTED TAPE

Abstract

In heat transfer augmentation or intensification, the technique of improving the performance of heat transfer system leads to reduce the size and cost of the heat exchanger. Many techniques of active and passive techniques are available for augmentation. One of this is to use twisted tape fitted with circular tube. The heat transfer coefficient increases with twist ratio. The presence of twisted tape directs toward reducing the hydrodynamic or thermal boundary layer thickness, leading to greater convective heat transfer. However, in the process, pumping power may increase significantly and ultimately the pumping cost becomes high. Therefore, to achieve a desired heat transfer rate in an existing heat exchanger at an economic pumping power, the design of twisted tape with a proper geometry is necessary. The decrease in friction factor is nearly two times lower than the full length helical twist at low Reynolds number, and four times lower than the full length helical twist at high Reynolds number for all twist ratios. The regularly spaced helical screw inserts can safely be used for heat transfer augmentation without much increase in pressure drop than full length helical screw inserts. In this paper, some techniques of Heat transfer enhancement by swirl flow are compared. Here, experimental investigations of heat transfer characteristics of circular tube fitted with full-length helical screw element of different twist ratio and increasing and decreasing order of twist ratio have been studied with uniform heat flux. The experimental data obtained are compared with those obtained from plain tube published data.
