Title

Nanotechnology and Its Applications

Abstract

The concept “Nanotechnology” was Feynman on 29th December, 1959 in his talk entitled “There's plenty of room at the bottom” at the California Institute of Technology. Deriving its name from the Greek word “dwarf” meaning small, nanotechnology need as the combined art of science and technology of is commonly de need the small things. National Nanotechnology Initiative in US has de scale range for nanotechnology as 1 to 100 nm. Particles at their nanoscale behave extremely well by acquiring new properties due to increased surface area. For instance gold becomes a good catalyst for fuel cells and semiconductors at nanoscopic sizes. Nanotechnology is a positive approach for manipulating things at molecular or atomic level to create unique materials with enormous potential. It offers endless opportunities to design smaller, cheaper, and faster devices that can perform better at nanoscale [one nano-meter (one billionth of meter)] than the same materials being at large scale. Because of the wide range of potential applications it is common to use the term "nanotechnologies" or "nanoscale technologies.Nanotechnology in India began early in the millennium. The “NanoScience and Technology Initiative” started with a funding of Rs. 60 crore. In 2007, the government launched a 5 year program called Nano Mission with wider objectives and larger funding of USD 250 million. The funding spanned multiple areas like basic research in nanotechnology, human resources development, infrastructure development and international collaboration. Multiple institutions like Department on Information Technology, Defense Research and Development Organization, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and Department of Biotechnology provided the funding to researchers, scholars and projects. National Centers for Nanofabrication and Nano electronics were started in Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai.Nano technology holds great potential for India and a multi pronged approach will ensure that this is fully leveraged. Funding should be increased and long term funding which can accommodate coherent research programs with high-impact outcome is needed. Various research centers throughout India must work together so that the collective efforts can lead to better results. A highly equipped central facility should plan and initiate research activities.
