Title

Analysis and Design of Heavy Industrial Building and Study of Different Roof Systems

Abstract

Analysis and design of a heavy industrial building with north light roof system was carried out using STAAD.Pro software. This study focuses on the wind effects on different roof systems. Four major roof systems studied were north light roof, pitched roof with angle 6 degrees and 12 degrees and curved roof with roof angle at tie level 12 degrees. Parameters of the study include loading pattern, overall effect on the structure with respect to uplift, deflection, weight and member forces. Results indicated that pitched roof angle greater than 10° have major uplift with respect to those below it and also w.r.t North light and curved roof structures. For North light structure, lateral deflection should be of major concern while for pitched roof structures and curved roof structures, vertical deflection should be looked upon. North light structure was found 10% heavier than pitched roof and curved roof structures as they require more attention for lateral stability. Middle columns of main frame were found to have 75% reserve capacity in pitched roof and curved roof structures with respect to North light structures. These columns can be optimized for given load conditions and can perform better in worst case scenarios with respect to North light structures.
