Over a long period of time, physical and chemical changes degrade the visual appearance of paintings. As a part of the restoration and conservation of these paintings, they are digitally scanned and analyzed for anomalies. As art museums are digitizing their collections, a cross-disciplinary interaction between image analysts, mathematicians and art historians is emerging, putting to use recent advances made in the field of image processing. This paper aims to highlight the extensive use of Digital image processing in Art restoration and conservation while studying its various methods and techniques. The paper gives an overview of the digitization of art and applications of image processing for restoration and conservation.
