There are many factors that contribute to the learning of a musical instrument. The following study is exploratory in nature. The focus was on identifying the multiple factors that contribute to the learning of the guitar. There was also an aim to understand the working memory capacity and the learning style/modality of an experienced guitarist. The sample consisted of 40 guitarists, among which 8 of them were randomly selected for an interview to understand the different factors that contributed to their learning. The NIMHANS Verbal N back test was used to test working memory. It was found that guitarists had a very high working memory. The O’Brien Questionnaire was used to study the different learning modalities of guitarists. Most guitarists were primarily known to be Kinesthetic learners and secondarily auditory learners. The interview results indicated that early family exposure, a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and subjective methods to overcome problems and develop skills were important for learning.
