Title

Seed Production: A Better Business Prospect for Farmers of Odisha

Abstract

Seed is the central point for higher production and productivity of crops in agriculture. The seeds are to be r genetically pure and physically healthy to assure full germination. The farmers in general and Odisha in particular face the problems of availability of quality seeds in time. It is one of the top ranking agenda of agricultural sector in the country. The successful use of hybrid seeds not only opened the doors of higher production per unit area but also opened new avenues for business in agriculture. Production of quality hybrid seeds is now taken as business for which search of seed producers is in increasing demand. With such back ground the paper high lights the area, production and productivity of hybrid rice in the state along with reactions of seed producers in seed production and seed business to provide insight of the situations too all stakeholders of the seed chain. A randomly selected 50 seed producers of the state ( District Puri and Bargarh) having full experience for at least three years experience in seed production provided required information as sample respondents as per objective of the study. The findings reveal a up and down trend in area, production and productivity of hybrid rice in the state which need be stabilized. The problems encountered by the seed producers are found to be process of registration as seed producer, timely availability of breeder seeds, demand for local varieties, sudden change in climate and non provision of adequate compensation for non-lifting seeds. In spite of problems the seed producers are in opinion that net profit per hectare is never less than of Rs. 50,000, assured market with intervention of training to farmers and popularity of hybrid seeds among literate farmers. The hybrid seed has greater future in the state owing increased emphasis of State Government
