Title

Analysis of a fixed-fixed beam using FEM

Abstract

Abstract: Dynamic analysis of a beam using Timoshenko beam theory is a cause of concern for engineers For a beam, as defined by Timoshenko beam theory, cross-sectional dimensions (both width and height in case of a rectangular cross-section) are not less than one-by-tenth of its length. The aim of this dissertation is to compare the results of ANSYS for a Timoshenko beam. The result is plotted by solving the ‘discretized (using FTCS) forth-order partial differential equation with constant coefficients’ for a Timoshenko beam element. ANSYS results are obtained by conducting the ‘Transient Dynamic analysis’ on fixed-fixed Timoshenko beam. ‘Transient dynamic analysis’ includes the application of load for a very-very small interval of time. ‘Transient dynamic analysis’ on ANSYS gives ‘plots of ‘displacement’, ‘velocity’ and ‘acceleration’ versus time’, ‘mode shapes’, ‘degrees of freedom’. To get the solution from both ANSYS, finite element method is incorporated, means Timoshenko beam is converted into finite number of small elements.
