An autoclave is the most vital steam sterilizer equipment used to sterilize objects under regulated pressure. It provides a physical method for sterilization. Autoclave work with a combination of steam, pressure and time. Hence it comes under moist heat sterilization technique. It operates at very high temperature and pressure required to kill microorganisms and spores. The combined effect of steam and pressure is responsible for reducing microbial contamination. An autoclave is designed and constructed in such a manner to minimize the effect of extraneous factors and to maximize the reliability of sterilization. The more is the pressure the more is the effect of steam. The main purpose of this document is to give awareness on the understanding, operation, handling to the personnel who is handling the autoclave and their coworkers. This is also to provide information regarding the hazards and incidents associated with autoclave. This will also ensure the safety of handling the instrument.
