Respiratory allergies are a common malady mainly presenting as asthma and allergic rhinitis. A variety of substances including dust mites, pollens etc are capable of eliciting an allergic response causing release of large amounts of histamine and other inflammatory mediators. These mediators, in turn produce a wide array of symptoms of upper and lower airways ranging from shortness of breath and rhinorrhoea to congestion and chest tightness. The severity of the reaction may range from mild self-terminating condition to fatal anaphylactic shock. The management involves prevention of contact with allergen and drug interventions along with supportive measures. The drugs mainly target the existing signs and symptoms and offer short term relief from the condition. However, some others aim to establish cure and possess immunomodulatory properties. The current review based on systemic search on scientific studies presents a general overview of allergic conditions including etiological factors and highlights some drug modalities that can be sought for respiratory allergies.
