Title

HEMP AS ARCHITECTURAL MATERIAL

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential uses of Hemp in creating sustainable, economic and environment friendly buildings. Construction industry is one of the major contributor towards global warming due to its large carbon footprint. A large amount of resources are spent globally for the production of construction materials such as cement and steel which are the main materials for the construction of buildings today. By replacing “Hemp” as a construction material, in countries like India, architecture structures can be made more economical and environment friendly while maintaining their aesthetic values. The methodology involved the study of various case examples from around the world where several hemp based materials, like-Hempcrete, Hemp-bricks, hemp based paints, etc., have been used for construction. The key findings from these case studies suggest that these structures were built for reasons such as to make the construction more economical and Environment friendly as possible. Studies regarding the use of hemp in India suggests that while this magical material has been in use for construction and other such activities since ancient times, the use of it in modern day construction still remains unexplored. This is majorly due to the fact that in countries like U.S.A and India open cultivation of Hemp is still considered Illegal.
