Title

Brain Stimulation Techniques and Clinical Technology for Psychiatric Disorders: A review

Abstract

Abstract: The prevalence of mental disorders is increasing at an alarming rate. Disorders like Bipolar Disorder, Schizophrenia, Major Depressive Disorders and Anxiety Disorders usually consist of conventional treatments like psychotherapy and medication. But in some cases when the patient does not respond well to these therapies or is treatment resistant, options like Brain Stimulating techniques are usually used as a last resort. Brain Stimulation techniques include Electro-Convulsive Therapy, Deep Brain Stimulation, Vagus Nerve Stimulation, Transcranial Magnetic stimulation, Magnetic Seizure Therapy and their subtypes. The outcomes of these procedures are highly promising in most cases, but it’s not always necessary that the patient will respond in accordance. These procedures also have consequential side effects like memory loss, tremors, voice change, double vision, mood swings, etc since these techniques work by either activating or inhibiting electrical activity in the brain by either direct electrodes, implants or non-invasively by scalp electrodes, clips and application of electro-magnetism. This review covers and compares the procedure and parameters such as the efficiency, chance of remission, side effects and modern day upgrades and research to these clinical technologies and discusses the probable outcomes and drawbacks based on these parameters.
