Gram negative bacteria constitute a major proportion of pathogenic microbes. An array of molecules is used by them to alter host mechanisms and establish inside them. Their strategies of pathogenesis not only involve the specialized virulence factors, but also the proteins and molecules involved in general functions of the pathogen. These molecules are used as weapons against the host by modulation of their structures, expression levels and functions. One of the major class of outer membrane proteins called porins act as channels in Gram negative bacteria. However, in the event of evolution, they have evolved a variety of other functions. Properties like resistance to antibiotics, immune evasion, receptor function, cell death initiation of host cells and many other functions are conferred upon pathogenic bacteria by porins. Porins help in adherence as well leading to firm establishment of the infection inside host system. In this chapter, we intend to summarize all the functions that porins perform for its host microorganism.
