Sugarcane is one of the leading agricultural crops and India is 3rd largest exporter of sugar, after Brazil and Thailand producing nearly 25 % of global sugarcane. The industrial processing of sugarcane leads to generation of residues such as press mud, molasses and sugarcane bagasse. This end product comprises of approximately 41.4% glucan, 28.2% xylan, 1.3% galactan and 23.6% lignin as well as structural polymers in its composition. This lignocellulosic waste has immense potential to be valorized for production of high-value products and contribute to transition from linear fossil based economy to bio-based circulareconomy. Several commercial enzymes, alkaloids, bioethanol, butanol and methane can be produced by microbial fermentation of this agro-residue. The present review addresses the various valorization routes which lead to generation of biofuels and other bio-based value-added products which serve the dual purpose of agro-waste management along with generation of economic revenue.
