Title

Geography as Psychological Marking: Subalternity is Territorial

Authors

Abstract

Present paper analyses how geography is etched on the psychology of a subaltern by referring the condition of Bakha portrayed in the novel Untouchable. The geographical segregation plays an important role in social grouping. Foucault explores the role of power discourses in architecture and medical sciences same does occur in the case of untouchable social agents. Their placement is made in such a manner that they have been not only outcasted from the town but also from the history books and voice of their own. They have no history, no symbol and no discourse of their own. Running away from this destiny is impossible as all the tools are hidden and no door of escape is there. However, doors are always open but subalterns do not have the knowledge of how to access it. The liberty has its consequences and for subalterns these consequences are dire. This segregation can also work in their favour as it can unify them and make them aware about the causes of their subjugation, but interestingly these scavengers also do not have access to collective consciousness which can be developed only by the ideological existence of unified selves. Categorising and situating untouchables outside of main social milieu is enough to crash their confidence and dignity.
