Title

Study of Mother-Daughter Relationship Portrayed in Elif Shafak's Novel Three Daughters of Eve

Abstract

What is scary about the toxic relationships is that the signs are not always clearly visible. As a matter of fact, some children do not envision they have an unsound tie with their parents before they become fully mature or, in some cases, when it is too late. The mother-child relationship can be complicated, but sometimes the women who should nurture and support their children are rather the source of pain to their children. All mothers make mistakes, but mistakes in character and flaws are two very different things. A mother can be lethal to her children when her troublesome behaviour becomes so deeply ingrained that she does not even realize the harm that she is causing to her children. When these types of situations actually happen, the innocent children are left extremely confused. Elif Shafak has made a valuable attempt to address the psychological aspects of such mother-daughter relationships in her very well acclaimed 2016 novel Three Daughters of Eve. The novel is an account of a Turkish Muslim girl’s journey from her childhood to her married life through a number of reminiscences from her past in Oxford University. Peri was an offspring of a moderate Muslim family, becomes an adult in the fierce 21st century. This article examines and explains the psychic aspects of parent-child bond and draws out the mother-daughter connections in the novel.
