Large cardamom is an important spice, mostly occurred in Sikkim and Darjeeling. It is belongs to family of zingibaeraceae. It is grows well in NE Himalayan region having an altitudes of 1000 to 2200 m above MSL. The plant is shade loving and cultivated as cash crop in NE Himalayan region. Due to its broad altitude and varied agro-climatic conditions a wide genetic variation of large cardamom is seen to the sub- Himalaya region of India. So far, there are 220 accession and six major variety reported from ICRI, regional centre, Gangtok. An another two high yielding variety ICRI Sikkim-1 and ICRI Sikkim-2 have also been developed through selection from Sawney cultivar. There are different cultivars comes up well based on altitude and different agro-climatic conditions, which increasing the chances to improved new cultivars of large cardamom.
