Title

Acid and Reactive dyes for Sericin treated polyester fabric

Abstract

Abstract This paper examines the effectiveness of sericin to improve color uptake of acid and reactive dyes on polyester fabric. A 100% polyester fabric was produced with 3 pick density namely 60x60, 60x54, 60x48 and subjected to pre-treatment of 15%, 25% sodium hydroxide. Sericin was extracted from cultivated silk cocoon by boiling them under pressure and applied on pre-treated polyester fabric using pad-dry-cure process. Glutaraldehyde and magnesium chloride were used as cross-linking agent and catalyst respectively. Three different shades of both the dyes were observed for their color strength (K/S value). It was noticed that a highest color strength value of 30.67 was found for acid dye and 38.83 for reactive dye with 25% alkali treatment. The results revealed that the presence of sericin in the polyester fabric makes it possible to dye using acid and reactive dye with bright colors.
