An iron is an appliance having a flat and rough triangular surface that, when heated, is used to press clothes to remove the wrinkles. It performs this process by loosening the ties in between the molecules that are present in polymer fibre materials. With the application of heat and weight imposed by the ironing plate, the fibres of the cloth are being stretched whereby the fabric tries to maintain its new shape on cooling. Some materials like cotton require the application of water to loosen the intermolecular bonds of the cloth. Prior to the invention of electricity, irons were heated by combustion, either in a fire or with some internal arrangement.
