Title

Effect of Temperature on the Yield of Carbon Nanotubes Synthesized by Thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition Technique

Abstract

On account of their fascinating electrical, electronic, mechanical and thermal properties carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have drawn ample attention of the entire research community. Consequently, CNTs have been synthesized by various methods with varied degree of control on their structure and properties for using in a wide variety of applications ranging from delicate nano-electronics to bulk structural composites and energy storage devices. Each method of synthesis has its own advantages and limitations. In the present study, effect of growth temperature on the yield and quality of synthesized CNTs has been investigated. The experimental results showed that the yield of the produced CNTs is significant within a temperature window of is 650C- 850 C with a maxima at temperature of ~700 C. The quality of the CNTs was found to degrade at temperaturesbeyond this window on either sides. At low temperature it decreases due to incomplete dissociation and formation of amorphous carbon species while at high temperature the CNTs yield was found to decrease due to change in the rate of chemical reaction.
