Title

Influence of Heat-Treatment on the Development of Fiber Micro-Texture

Abstract

Carbon fibres have occupied a unique place among advanced engineering materials. There are four main precursors used for their synthesis; cellulose,pitch, poly-acrylonitrileand rayon. Poly-acrylonitrile precursor fiber was used in this study to investigate the influence of presence of matrix on the textural development of fiber with heat-treatment. The precursor fiber was heat-treated at various temperatures ranging from 600C-2600 C prior and after incorporating in the matrix. On the basis of the results obtained from polarized optical microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy, it was observed that due to the physico-chemical transformations associated with matrix shrinkage a distinct textural development took place in the fiber incorporated in matrix before heat-treatment. No textural development took place in the fiber without embedding into the matrix due to absence of deriving force originating from matrix shrinkage. At low temperatures the fiber was found to consist randomly oriented graphenes with extremely short length. The ordering and length of graphenes increased with increasing heat-treatment temperature resulted from preferred orientation, aligning and end-to-end joining. At sufficiently high temperature of the order of 2600 C the folded graphenes become straighten forming graphite-like-structure.
