Modern information systems such as cloud systems and IOT generate large warehouse of data everyday and digital technologies. This data is increased on a regular basis from many sources and technologies. This is large in velocity, value and size. Besides this, data may approach in various formats like structured and unstructured also. The extraction of useful data for various purposes comes under data analysis. In this paper, various characteristics of big data have been discussed. The applications of big data are also illustrated. The paper also focuses on big data challenges and characteristics.
