The austenitic stainless steel is the largest group of the stainless steels. These types of the stainless steel have good corrosion resistance properties in all the environments. These alloys can be used up to the service temperature of 760°C. These steel also show good properties at cryogenic applications. The austenitic stainless steel consists of 16- 26% Chromium, 8-24% Nickel,1-2% Manganese 0.5-3% silicon, 0.02-0.08% Carbon, 0-0.2% Molybdenum, 0-0.15% Nitrogen, 0-0.2%Titanium & Niobium. Most of the ferritic Stainless steels can be welded by Tungsten inert gas welding without filler material. In the welding of martensitic steels the filler material should be of same chromium and carbon content as that of base metal. During the cooling of these weld joint there has been tendency of weld cracking because of the formation of hard brittle martensite.
