Trauma is one of the foremost themes of contemporary literature. People with history of trauma are often to develop low self-esteem as well as high helping tendencies. This paper aims to prove these ideas applying in Khaled Hosseini’s A Thousand Splendid Suns comparing the two female characters Mariam and Laila. Mariam is an unwanted child who longed for love and acceptance from the day of birth till death. She has been rejected by her own family members. She heeded to the pessimistic tone even from her mother with the reference of harami. She has been discouraged in all her endeavour being a female. The researcher takes the character Mariam for his analysis to find out the interconnectedness of trauma, self-esteem and helping tendencies
