The word "Visha" comes from the fact that it can make people feel hopeless, even if they are divine beings. Visha is classified according to its properties, composition, potency, and place of origin. According to their degree of toxicity and potency, poisons are classified as Mahavisha or Upavisha in a number of Ayurvedic classics and medieval writings. Visha essentially describes substances that, once ingested, interfere with the body's normal functions or even endanger a person. It can also refer to anything that causes the world to be sad. Visha is divided into Jangamavisha (poisons derived from animals) and Sthavaravisha (poisons derived from plants and minerals) based on their place of origin. Ayurvedic texts such as Rasatrangini, Sushrut Samhita, and Charak Samhita all make reference to Visha. Drugs known as Upavisha, or Semi-poisonous substances, have a lower level of toxicity but can still cause some toxic symptoms when taken. The detrimental effects of these symptoms can be controlled with therapeutic interventions and they are usually less severe and not life-threatening.
