Title

BARRIERS TO FINANCIAL LITERACY IN INDIA: AN INQUIRY INTO POVERTY, GENDER GAPS, LINGUISTIC DIVERSITY, AND THE LACK OF EDUCATION AMONG TEENAGERS

Abstract

Financial literacy, defined by OECD as the combination of knowledge, skills, and behavior essential for financial well-being, is crucial yet faces significant barriers in India. This paper examines four primary barriers: poverty, gender gaps, linguistic diversity, and the lack of financial education among teenagers. Poverty sustains limited financial literacy due to cognitive strain and inadequate public education. Gender disparities show women lagging in financial knowledge, limiting their economic independence and societal contribution. India's linguistic diversity restricts access to financial resources, often available only in English or Hindi, underscoring the need for localized materials. Lastly, the absence of financial literacy in school curricula, coupled with cultural taboos around discussing money, leaves Indian teenagers unprepared for financial decision-making. Addressing these barriers through inclusive educational initiatives, bilingual resources, and targeted interventions can empower individuals and foster economic growth.
