Honour killings have been profoundly ingrained in Indian society for centuries, and they are frequently regarded as an "entrenched flaw" that corrodes the social fabric. This paper offers a thorough sociological examination of honour killings, emphasizing the social, cultural, and psychological factors that serve as catalysts for this lamentable occurrence. It explores the obstacles encountered by law enforcement agencies in identifying and prosecuting perpetrators of these offences. The paper underscores the importance of prevention and awareness strategies in preventing honour killings, promoting a multifaceted approach that includes the empowerment of women, community engagement, and education. Through the lenses of criminology and sociology, it investigates how societal institutions perpetuate detrimental traditions and shape offenders' behaviors. Furthermore, it critically evaluates the necessity of enacting specialized legislation to address honour killings in contrast to the effectiveness of current legal provisions, particularly Sections 99 and 101(1) of the BNS, in reducing this social evil. Lastly, the paper illuminates the underlying causes of honor killings and recommends effective global strategies for promoting awareness, preventing further occurrences, and fostering a societal transition towards the abolition of such practices.
