Title

Mahatma Gandhi's Vision for Women’s Empowerment in Rural Employment and Social Protection

Abstract

Mahatma Gandhi, a pioneer of social reform and empowerment in India, envisioned a society where women play a pivotal role in economic and social development. This paper examines Mahatma Gandhi’s vision for women’s empowerment in the context of rural employment and social protection in India, highlighting the principles of self-reliance, dignity of labor, and community participation. Gandhi recognized the integral role of women in societal development and advocated for their economic independence as foundational to achieving gender equality. The analysis begins by discussing contemporary data indicating the participation rates of rural women in various employment sectors, revealing both progress and persisting challenges. Notably, initiatives such as the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and self-help groups (SHGs) have significantly impacted women’s livelihoods, increasing their participation in the labor force and entrepreneurship. Through a comprehensive review, this study presents recent statistics, demonstrating the effectiveness of social protection mechanisms, including the National Food Security Act and various women’s pension schemes. Case studies from Andhra Pradesh illustrate successful implementations of SHGs and skill development programs that have enhanced women's economic status and empowered them socially. While these programs have yielded positive outcomes—such as increased income and savings—challenges remain, including socio-cultural constraints and limited access to technology, which hinder women's full participation in the economy. The discussion emphasizes the need for a multifaceted approach to empowerment, uniting government efforts, non-governmental organizations, and community initiatives to address barriers and strengthen support systems. In conclusion, the paper advocates for a holistic strategy that aligns with Gandhi's vision to ensure sustainable empowerment for rural women, fostering a more equitable society where all individuals can thrive. By incorporating lessons from Gandhi's philosophies and contemporary practices, stakeholders can work toward realizing a future that upholds the dignity and rights of women in rural India.
