Title

Mahatma Gandhi's Vision for Rural Women's Empowerment: Bridging Historical Insights with Contemporary Entrepreneurship and Skill Development

Abstract

The empowerment of rural women has been a pivotal aspect of sustainable development, particularly in the Indian context, where Mahatma Gandhi's vision laid the groundwork for social reform and economic independence. This paper examines the enduring impact of Mahatma Gandhi's vision for rural women's empowerment within the contemporary socio-economic landscape of India. It highlights Gandhi's belief that true independence is contingent upon the active participation and empowerment of women, particularly in rural settings. While significant strides have been made through government initiatives and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) aimed at enhancing women’s access to education, entrepreneurship, and skill development, numerous challenges persist. The study reveals that socio-cultural barriers, such as entrenched gender norms and limited mobility, continue to inhibit women’s full participation in economic activities. Economic constraints, including inadequate access to financial resources and markets, further complicate the pursuit of entrepreneurship among rural women. Educational disparities, characterized by high dropout rates and limited vocational training opportunities, exacerbate these challenges, underscoring the need for a multi-faceted approach to empowerment. A thorough analysis of current initiatives, such as the Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana and the establishment of self-help groups (SHGs), illustrates the potential of Gandhi’s principles to foster economic self-sufficiency and community solidarity among women. However, the paper emphasizes the necessity of addressing institutional inefficiencies and improving the delivery of services to ensure these programs effectively reach their target demographics. The findings advocate for a holistic approach that integrates economic, educational, and health-related dimensions of empowerment while challenging socio-cultural norms through community engagement. The study concludes that overcoming barriers to rural women's empowerment requires collaborative efforts among policymakers, NGOs, and local communities to create an inclusive environment that values women's contributions. By honoring Gandhi’s vision and adapting it to modern contexts, society can work toward a future that fosters equality, independence, and dignity for rural women.
