Title

Smart Assistive Systems for Visually Impaired: A Communication-Based Approach to Obstacle Detection and Navigation

Authors

Abstract

This paper explores assistive technologies aimed at aiding individuals with disabilities, focusing on the development of an obstacle-detecting stick for blind individuals. The proposed solution integrates solar energy harvesting, piezoelectric energy, and low-power microcontrollers to create a sustainable, battery-free device. Through advanced sensor systems and intuitive voice feedback, this device offers a solution to improve mobility and independence for visually impaired individuals. The primary objective of this paper is to explore and propose a communication-based system integrated with obstacle detection technology to improve the mobility and safety of visually impaired users. The system utilizes a smart cane or wearable device equipped with ultrasonic sensors, vibration motors, and voice feedback to notify the user of nearby obstacles, offering real-time alerts through auditory or tactile communication. By combining advanced sensor technologies and user-centric design principles, the proposed system enhances environmental awareness and ensures safe navigation in both familiar and unfamiliar surroundings. Through the exploration of emerging communication methods, such as voice commands and wireless connectivity, the research demonstrates how these innovations can bridge the gap between traditional aids and modern, efficient, and affordable solutions. Ultimately, this work aims to empower visually impaired individuals with the tools necessary for safer and more independent mobility, improving their quality of life and facilitating greater social inclusion.
