India’s gig economy is rapidly expanding, especially within the delivery sector and among female participants. In 2024, blue-collar gig hiring surged 92%, predominantly in delivery and E commerce sectors. Delivery partners earn an average ₹27,700/month (₹2.5 lakh/year), though 98% earn under ₹5 lakh annually. Women’s participation in gig platforms has grown a staggering 100×, with women earning 30% more during peak seasons. Yet gig incomes remain unstable, with 77% earning under ₹2.5 lakh/year, and only 31% filing regular tax returns. Despite flexibility benefits, women and delivery workers face challenges income volatility, lack of social security, and regulatory gaps. To foster equitable growth, there is an urgent need for social protections, training, and transparent algorithms.
