Title

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE APPLICATIONS IN THE 21ST CENTURY: A CATALYST FOR INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN LIBRARY MANAGEMENT

Abstract

Today, libraries across the globe are leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) for information retrieval and management. In India, AI applications are being increasingly adopted in libraries. This technology is fundamentally transforming the way libraries operate in the 21st century. For example, the Library of Congress in the U.S. holds over 140 million books, many of which are digitized. AI enables quick and efficient access to this information for members of Congress. In the near future, AI will be a key driver of change in library governance, helping to retrieve critical information from both the internet and the dark web. As we face overwhelming information explosion in this digital age, AI offers the ability to extract relevant data in the desired form and language. With global efforts towards digitization, including born-digital resources, AI can consolidate and deliver information efficiently. AI is also expected to influence the four pillars of democracy and significantly impact economic and information systems. Although AI presents challenges such as lack of emotions, potential cyber threats, and ethical concerns, it also overcomes language barriers and automates routine tasks. AI is assisting in various library functions such as cataloguing, auto-tagging, user support (via chat bots and virtual reference), semantic and personalized search, smart shelving, demand forecasting, analytics, OCR, digital archiving, facial recognition for security, and workflow automation
