The Indian education system is one of the largest and most diverse education systems in the world, encompassing formal, informal, and non-formal modes of education and catering to learners from different social, economic, and cultural backgrounds. Rapid technological advancement and the emergence of digital learning have significantly transformed traditional educational practices and environments. In this context, smart and sustainable educational environments have gained importance in improving the quality, accessibility, and effectiveness of learning. However, existing literature on smart educational environments remains fragmented, with limited attention to students’ perspectives and the environmental characteristics that influence learning. The present study attempts to address this gap by proposing an ontology and conceptual model of smart and sustainable educational environments from students’ perspectives. The proposed model identifies key environmental characteristics that support learning activities and provides a structured framework for understanding students’ experiences. A questionnaire based on the model is developed and validated to assess students’ perceptions of their educational environments. The study further examines the relevance of different environmental characteristics to learning and identifies differences between designed and perceived environmental features. The findings emphasize the importance of learner-centred, technology-enabled, and sustainable educational spaces and provide useful insights for the planning and development of future educational environments in India.
