Title

A study to assess the quality of life ,stress and coping strategies among lung cancer patients attending OPD in Tata Medical Center, Kolkata .

Abstract

In India, Lung cancer constitutes 6.9% of all new cancer cases. Lung cancer patients suffer psychological impairment that is related to anxiety ,depression, stress, etc. They are at higher risk of having psychological and social distress than any other form of cancer. A descriptive study was conducted to assess Quality of life , stress, and coping strategies among lung cancer patients in Tata Medical center, Kolkata. Aims of the present study was to assess the Quality of life, stress, and coping strategies and find out the association between stress, coping strategies and selected demographic variables among lung cancer patient. 60 patients selected as sample by purposive sampling technique. Data were collected from 60 patients by interview through structured questionnaire with Likert scale on Quality of life, Stress and coping strategies. Result should be based on objective Quality of life has measured on two domain as functional and symptoms. Study findings revealed that 42 (70%) had low quality with scores in between (38-60)on functional domain in symptoms domain also where score lied in between (33-52). Stress was measured through structured questionnaire on four point Likert Scale. Study revealed that 40 (66.70%) had severe stress with scores in between (34-44)of lung cancer patient. Coping strategies was measured through structured questionnaire on four point Likert scale. Study revealed that 46 (76.6%)were with mild coping. Study findings can be implicated for assessment Quality of life ,Stress and coping strategies of lung cancer patients in clinical areas and planned accordingly to take care of those areas.

Key Words

Quality of life: - In the present study quality of life means the expressions of living experiences of lung cancer patient as measured through interview with structured questionnaires on 15 items related to functional scale and 13 items related to symptoms scale with a four point Likert scale. Stress: - In the present study stress refers to the verbal responses of the cancer lung patients as measured by structured questionnaires on 11 items related to mental and emotional reaction expressed by them with a five point Likert scale. Coping strategies:-: In this study coping strategies refers to the verbal response of the lung cancer patients as measured by structured questionnaires on 10 items related to the way of managing or seeking help for the situations with the four point Likert scale.
