Novice teachers often face challenges such as classroom management, time management, and adapting to diverse student needs, which can impact their performance and job satisfaction. Their effectiveness and professional growth can be enhanced through targeted support, mentorship, and professional development opportunities. This study aims to explore the challenges and performance of novice teachers, as well as to identify specific factors that significantly impact their effectiveness. Specifically, it examined the respondents’ profile, assessed the level of the respondents’ challenges based on classroom management, lesson planning, student engagement, time management, parental communication, and adapting to diversity, and the level of the teacher’s performance when grouped according to their characteristics. This study involved four hundred (400) novice teachers in Southwest I and II Districts, Division of Cagayan de Oro City, for the School Year 2023-2024. A researcher – made questionnaire was employed, and the data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency, mean, standard deviation, Pearson Correlation Coefficient, and one-way ANOVA using a universal sampling method in selecting the respondents.
The findings underscore that most respondents are aged 41 years and above, indicating a significant number of individuals entering the teaching profession later in their careers. Additionally, the survey reveals a predominantly female workforce; the largest group of participants hold the position of Teacher II and have prior experience in private institutions. A high portion of 6 to 10 kilometers distance from residence to school. It concludes that effective classroom management and adaptation to diversity are crucial in shaping the success of novice teachers. When teachers manage their classrooms well, they create a conducive learning environment that enhances student engagement and achievement. Adapting to diverse student needs allows teachers to reach every learner, fostering inclusivity and reducing disparities. These skills also enable novice teachers to handle challenges more efficiently, minimizing stress and burnout. Ultimately, strong classroom management and a commitment to diversity lead to more effective teaching and improved student outcomes.
It is recommended that School Heads utilize the School Management Plan and cultivate a supportive school culture that promotes growth through effective time management, personal growth and professional development, and community linkages.
