Title

Alice Munro's The Runaway: Feminist Reading by Prasanth

Authors

Abstract

This study investigates the concept of liberal feminism, as expressed by Mary Wollstonecraft, and how it's utilized in Alice Munro's Runaway short story collection. Liberal feminism, founded on Wollstonecraft's theory, promotes women's equality through greater education, political rights, and equal legal standing, challenging patriarchal societal conventions. The analysis focuses on three stories from Munro's collection—"Chance," "Soon," and "Silence"—in which the protagonist, Juliet, is portrayed as a liberal feminist juggling identity, autonomy, and familial duties in a male-dominated society.Juliet's journey exemplifies the fundamental principles of liberal feminism: the quest of logic, self-determination, and liberation from established gender norms. Munro's work emphasizes the connection between personal choices and societal restrictions, demonstrating the long-term impact of previous actions on women's identities. The study also underlines feminist the written word's greater importance for challenging the disparity between men and women and promoting female perspectives in cultural and social contexts. This study highlights the long-lasting importance of liberal feminism throughout literature through linking Munro's narrative to the writer's essential concepts. It provides a critical viewpoint on the complexities of women's lives and identities, promoting deeper research into Munro's works and their feminist implications.
