Title

FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF CELECOXIB EMULGEL FOR TOPICAL DELIVERY

Abstract

This study is aimed to develop and evaluate emulgel system of Celecoxib for topical delivery a hydrophobic drug. Emulgel enhances the desirable and positive characteristics of gels and emulsions, at the same time improving the solubility and bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs, as well as improving patient compliance. Carbopol 934, and Xanthan Gum, underwent incorporation of clove oil as a penetration enhancer. Key evaluations included: Physical Properties: Various properties of the emulgel, including physical appearance, pH, spreadability, viscosity, and drug content were studied and were observed to be within the acceptable limits. In-vitro Drug Release: The release of Celecoxib was carried out, And the release mechanism was food diffusion-controlled release up to the 8-hour. Stability Studies: The formulations were carried out for stability tests over a period of three months, and it was found that the formulations based on Xanthan Gum were stable compared to the formulations based on Carbopol 934. The optimized formulation (F4) had a lower concentration of light liquid paraffin and a higher concentration of emulsifiers in the formulation and this could be the reason for the efficacy of the optimized formulation. Based on drug release and stability studies, the emulgel formulation prepared using Xanthan Gum could prove to be the most suitable formulation. This paradigm shift in drug delivery systems could increase the therapeutic efficacy of topical medications.
