Title

Effect of peppermint tea on morning sickness: Narrative Review

Abstract

Pregnancy often brings a variety of physiological changes, one of the most common and distressing being morning sickness, also known as nausea and vomiting of pregnancy. This condition, also referred to as emesis gravidarum, affects up to 70% of pregnant women, typically manifesting in the first trimester and gradually subsiding by the 16th week of gestation. The underlying causes of morning sickness are complex, involving hormonal fluctuations, such as increased estrogen and progesterone levels, which can lead to excessive gastric acid secretion and decreased gastrointestinal motility. While these changes are a natural adaptation to pregnancy, they can severely impact a woman's quality of life, leading to dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and even hospitalization in severe cases. Given the prevalence and disruptive nature of morning sickness, expectant mothers and healthcare providers alike have long sought effective and safe remedies to alleviate its symptoms. One potential intervention that has garnered attention is the use of peppermint tea, a popular herbal beverage with a history of traditional use for gastrointestinal ailments. Narrative review of the literature synthesizing the findings of literature retrieved from searches of computerized databases, hand searches, and authoritative texts. The anti-emetic properties of peppermint have been attributed to its active compounds, such as menthol, which may help to relax the smooth muscle of the gastrointestinal tract and reduce nausea. Keywords – pregnant mothers, peppermint tea, morning sickness, hyperemesis gravidarum.
