Title

Property Rights of women: A comparative study of Hindu and Muslim laws

Authors

Abstract

The Hindu Succession Act of 1956 governs the property rights of Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Jains. In contrast, the Indian Succession Act of 1925 governs Christians and neither Shias nor Sunnis have codified their property rights. Acc. to Hindu and Islamic scholars, the property laws in these religions and cultures are fair as the distribution of property is done based on the responsibilities and the roles of men and women in society. Property law and the importance of property inheritance are equally important in Islam and Hinduism. Both religions have established principles and regulations for property ownership. Research indicates that that Hindu and Muslim property laws fluctuate greatly due to differences in location and time.
