Title

BREAST FEEDING TECHNIQUE IN TERMS OF KNOWLEDGE AND PRACTICE AMONG THE MOTHERS OF CHILDREN

Abstract

Breastfeeding becomes a part of a woman’s identity as she enters the journey into motherhood. Throughout their journey into motherhood women weigh up information about breastfeeding in relation to this as they decide what to do. Background: Multiple research reports showed regarding to factors affect the effective breastfeeding techniques are young mothers, primiparity, illiterate mother, unemployed mother, breast diseases, previous breastfeeding experience, Postnatal Care (PNC). Purpose: The study aimed to assess the “Effectiveness of planned teaching programme (PTP) on breastfeeding technique in terms of knowledge and practice among the mothers of children in selected hospital, West Bengal”. Methods: The study was conducted by adopting control and experimental two groups pre-test and post-test design among 80 breastfeeding mothers by using convenient sampling technique. A pre-test & post-test was conducted to assess the existing level of knowledge and practice regarding breastfeeding by using the same standardized tools. Results: Analysis revealed that in control group, the “t” test value of pre-test & post-test was 0.5 & 0.2 at the level of P<0.05. In experimental group, the “t” test value of pre test & posttest was 4.9 & 12.06 at the level of P<0.05. It indicated that there was effectiveness of planned teaching programme regarding breastfeeding techniques among the mothers of children. Conclusions: The researcher concludes that the planned teaching programme is effective in increasing knowledge and enhancing practice regarding breastfeeding among the mothers of children. The study has several implications in nursing.
