The presence of reliable optical performance monitors plays the crucial role in achieving the robust, cost effective and self managed operation of optical network. There exist numerous OPMs based on the algorithmic approaches (LP's heuristic etc.) analyzing the eye diagram, constellation diagram and histogram. The performance of these conventional methods can be substantially increases by implementing the neural network for performance monitoring. The different approaches demonstrating application of neural network in optical network are summarized in this paper. The different network types, training techniques adopted till date are summarized.
