Title

SHIRODHARA AN AYURVEDIC THERAPY FOR MENTALL ILLNESS; A CASE REVIEW

Abstract

Human being has to face various challenges in day to day life because of a different kind of social &occupational pressure lead to anxietyinsomania, loss of concentration, headache, unusual behaviour, unhappiness etc. There is a close connection between our body and our mind. Charaka defined Chinta (stress)-atichintan (overthinking) are the causative factors of the vitiation of Rasavaha Srotas-a body channelthat may cause many diseases in the human bodyAyurveda and its principal towards mental health and illness now a days can play a great role There are many allied bio-physical procedures also within the purview of Panchkarma as a help in treating various ailments. Shirodhara(oil dripping on fore head) is one of them having of such procedures having theirspecific method of application and indication as reference of Ayurveda. formed by two different terms Shira (head) and Dhara (flow) is pouring of fluids like decoction, medicated oil, medicated milk. A clinical case of 29 year old female patient Lalita Yadav comes with complaints like anxiety, insomania, loss of concentration, headache, unusual behaviour, unhappiness etc She was assessed on the basis of the Profile Of Mood Score (POMS) questionnaire,The patient was treated by Shirodhara with Brahmitailam for 14 days continuously. Results were assessed by POMS score. At the end of Shiroadhara, there wassignificant improvement found in presenting complaints as well as on the POMS Score and Stress level. During or after the treatment, no adverse events were observed.
