Like regulatory theory, governance predates the field of communication studies. Governance may be traced back to a number of different academic fields. The discipline of economics is where the word "governance" first appeared in the scholarly literature. The term "governance" was originally used to refer to institutional regulations that cut down on transaction expenses. According to this view, the organisational structure of the company might serve as a substitute for co-operation in the market. In modern economics, the term "governance" often refers to the practise of "corporate governance," or the division of company ownership and management. The subject of how management may be managed and held responsible is raised by researchers who, drawing on agency theory, examine the dynamic between owners, often shareholders, and management.
