Violence against women is a serious violation of the human rights of women and is main barrier to womens’ empowerment and equal participation in society. India has enacted many legislative and constitutional provisions and many progressive plans to improve the position of women. But there is still no end to violence against women. Violence against women is partly the result of gender relations that men perceive as superior to women. Given the inferior status of women, much of gender violence is taken into account normal and enjoys social sanction. Today people live in the so-called civilized and democratic society which is based on the principles of equality and freedom for all. As India is a patriarchal society, women’s position, prestige, power etc. are generally determined and dominated by men. Violence against women causes misery and suffering to the victims and their families and imposes a massive burden on society.
