Title

Teaching English using Skype: An Exploratory Study in Iran

Abstract

The article explores uses of Skype for the teaching of English language. The status of Skype as a communication/ teaching tool has already been established, but recently Zoom overplayed almost all the apps except the professional platforms like the ‘blackboard learn’. Skype has been equally effective for smaller classes especially for tutoring. There is no need to schedule a meeting and one cal log in for even log hours. Since the study is not experimental, sophisticated statistical analyses have not been attempted except depending on personal Skype based teaching/tutoring experience and calculation of percentage of the responses of participants. The results of the questionnaire and the interview proved that many students who used Skype as a tool of distance learning responded in positive and confirmed the importance of learning English as a foreign language via Skype. Some teachers also confirmed about the features and benefits of skype. Hence, it was noted that the Skype may not be a perfect tool for a very large class.
