Afghanistan being a landlocked country has a history of its soil being invaded several times and also providing a way to invade India. The rulers who ruled Afghanistan were based mostly on hierarchy and had close relatives as rivals with little threat from outside. However, what we see today as Afghanistan has its roots in the first Anglo-Afghan war that broke out in 1839 with the British invasion, following a series of wars. Nevertheless, Afghanistan remained neutral in WWI and WWII but turned into a deck during the Cold War. The communist coup by the Soviet Union in 1979 led to the mobilisation of groups throughout the country against the new regime. The mobilisation led to the emergence of a group of Afghan Mujahideens also known as Islamic guerrilla fighters, composed of Pashtuns which was backed by the CIA and Pakistan’s ISI against the Soviet Union invasion. However, the various mujahideen resistance factions drove the nation into civil war after the Soviet Union withdrew in 1989 and lacked political cohesion among themselves, which paved the way for the Taliban's ascent.
