Title

COMPARATIVE STUDY OF ACADEMIC STRESS AND SUICIDAL TENDENCY AMONG GOVERNMENT COLLEGE HOME AND HOSTEL LIVING GIRLS

Abstract

Stress is a depressing physiological, psychological and behavioral procedure that occur as a person attempt to deal with stressor by Bernstein et al., 2008. Stress is often regarded as a mental procedure that involves an individual’s personal interpretation and reaction to any threatening event. In the present conditions what we see is that there is very tough competition, where everyone has to face challenges in one side and each has high level of desires but shortage of time to achieve these goals. Ultimately it occurs stress. Academic stress is like a force to do well in the examination, frightened from punishment and forceful examinations that is experienced by students. Academic stress has increased over the past few years. Teachers and parents also burdened the students with plenty of pressure for getting excellent grades. The academic stress is one of the considerable barriers to students’ academic performance. Suicide is the 3rd leading root cause of the death among 15 to 24 year olds. And 2nd leading root cause of death among college students (Schwartz, 2006). Suicide is not an illness. It is an amalgam set of behavior that exist a continuum from ideas to actions. The motive of the study was to study the relationship between academic stress and suicidal tendency amongst college going girls. The objective of comparative study is to determine the academic stress and suicidal tendency among government college home girls (Girl students who stay at home with family) and hostel girls. The sample for the present study consists of 400 students belonging to the age ranging from 17-22 years. The subjects were drawn randomly from Government Girls College in Udaipur, district, Rajasthan, India. Academic Stress is measured using the Academic Stress Scale was developed by Kim (1970) and Suicidal Tendency measured using the Suicide Probability Scale developed by John G. Cull and Wayne S. Gill (1988). The result of this study showed positive relationship between Academic Stress and Suicidal Tendency among (Home Living and Hostel Living) college going girls.
