Our Souls at Night by Kent Haruf provides a nuanced representation of elderly romance, defying traditional stereotypes and preconceptions about relationships in later life. The adaptation of this novel into a film directed by Ritesh Batra aims to convey the contemplative essence of the novel from pages to the big screen as well. The film Starring Jane Fonda as Addie Moore and Robert Redford as Louis Waters offers a genuine and poignant portrayal of love in the twilight years. This article focuses on the techniques employed in the film Our Souls at Night such as lighting, sound, and cinematography to show how these aspects of the story add to the representation of two elderly individuals and the emotional depth of the narrative. These components enhance the overall narrative, solidifying the bond between the audience and the characters, and bringing out the themes of vulnerability, friendship, and the quest for emotional fulfilment in life.
