Abstract
Background: Yavakshara is commonly used alkaline herbal preparation in Ayurveda. It has white colour, crystalline coarse powder and superior among other Kshara as well as it can be used for Lekhana Karma and having diuretic property. Yavakshara is used either as single drug or as an ingredient in many compound formulations. It includes potassium chloride 50.8%, Potassium sulphate 20.2 % and Potassium carbonate 6.8% because of alkaline property and Katu and Tikta Rasa and Ushna, Tikshna Guna and Lekhana Karma it may be act on dividing and growing cancer cells. Aim & objectives: To prepare comprehensive data related to various pharmaceutical procedures of Yavakshara recorded in various Ayurveda texts. Methods & Material: This review comprise data from Ayurveda classic text from 7th BC to 20th BC. Result: Total 205 number of preparations containing Yavakshara was found. Out of it 86 are Rasaushadhi, 39 are Churnam, 21 are Ghritam, 16 are Kshara, 10 are Tailam, 9 are Lepam, Kwatha, 5 are Guggulu, 2 are Vati and single number of preparations are Varti, Dhoopam, Rasayana, Manduram, Pathya, Avaleha, Anupana and Nasya. Yavakshara has Vata-Kapha Shamaka and Aamapachaka action. It has also Gulmanashaka and Kaphanisaraka Karma. Conclusion: A total of 214 Herbo-Herbo minerals preparations incorporates Yavakshara as an ingredient. Additionally, a single preparation of Yavakshara was found referenced in four texts. Total 23 classic mentioned in different preparation containing Yavakshara there are 187 formulation of Bharat Bhaishjya Kalapana and total 214 Herbo-Herbo minerals preparations incorporates Yavakshara as an ingredient. Additionally, a single preparation of Yavakshara was found referenced in four texts. a Ratanakara with Yavakshara and maximum preparation for Rasaushadhi. Followed by Vati, Guggulu, Lepa, Tailam, Ghritam, Churnam, Rasayana, Manduram etc. the formulation having Yavakshara as an ingredient are indicated in the treatment in various diseases. However more intense studies needed for a better understanding of Yavakshara and it use in prevention and curation of diseases.
