Title

Narrative Strategies and Psychological Tension in Chetan Bhagat's The Girl in Room 105: An Analysis of Thriller Elements and Character Dynamics

Abstract

Chetan Bhagat's The Girl in Room 105 represents a significant departure from his previous works, venturing into the territory of thrillers with a compelling blend of suspense, psychological tension, and complex character dynamics. This article delves into the narrative strategies employed by Bhagat to create a gripping storyline, focusing on the use of non-linear timelines, first-person perspective, and carefully crafted suspense-building techniques. The psychological tension in the novel is analysed through the lens of character motivations, internal conflicts, and the portrayal of obsession and guilt, which drive the plot forward. Additionally, the article examines the quintessential elements of a thriller—unexpected twists, red herrings, and the role of setting in creating a suspenseful atmosphere. Through a detailed analysis of the protagonist's journey and the influence of the ex-girlfriend's posthumous presence, this study sheds light on how Bhagat effectively uses character dynamics to escalate tension and deepen the narrative. The findings underscore The Girl in Room 105 as a notable contribution to the thriller genre within contemporary Indian literature, reflecting Bhagat's evolution as a storyteller and his ability to engage readers with a complex, multilayered narrative.
